1. Smugglers’ Notch

Smugglers’ Notch offers a great getaway, literally. Situated in the Mount Mansfield State Forest, the mountain pass is surrounded by evergreens and mountains and is so secluded, it was a favorite route used to smuggle liquor during the Prohibition. Smuggs (as it’s endearingly known) has been voted the number one resort in the East year after year and there’s every reason it should be. There’s something to enjoy all year round.

Fall is packed with fun festivals and there are always events being thrown like the beer and disc golf weekend. Located in the Snow Belt, some of the best snow skiing in the US can be found with three big mountains to choose from. Visiting in the summer is really cool too with activities like zip-lining, hiking, biking, boating and fishing in the river, and playing at the mountainside water playground.
