Ah, city life. Who doesn’t love crumbling infrastructure, homelessness, overpriced cocktails, and long wait times to go just about anywhere?

Oh, nobody likes those things you say?

A quick scan of America’s population centers would certainly indicate differently, of course. As cities across the country have been exposed as lethal cesspools masquerading as busy metropolises, city folk have been leaving for greener concrete pastures throughout 2020, heading to smaller cities seeking refuge.

If the coronavirus pandemic brings you no more gifts, let the longest lasting be your new obnoxious neighbors who have uprooted themselves from the city.

We’ve ranked the following small cities based off of several factors including online mentions, nightlife, population, and location. If you’ve been thinking of departing big city life for something a bit more scaled-down, you’ve come to the right place.

#10 Ann Arbor, Michigan

Step one: Go to Detroit.

Step Two: Leave immediately.

Step Three: Locate massive neon flashing sign that says “WELCOME HIPSTERS.”

Congratulations, you’ve located Ann Arbor, Michigan. What can I say about this place? Artists and creative types love it here. If you’re a nerd.. I mean fan of museums and natural beauty, this is absolutely the place for you.

The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History is teeming with displays from yesteryear, while the University itself boats an elite reputation and plays host to some of the best collegiate athletic teams in the country.

If the outdoors and nature is more of your thing, the Matthaei Botanical Gardens are a wildly popular stop for visitors as is the Nichols Arboretum. With a population just over 120,000, this small city is steeped with things to do and provides an immersive cultural experience.

#9 Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
