There are so many things to experience in San Francisco — like checking out the California Academy of Sciences or jumping on a streetcar for a tour around town. But, it’s the hidden gems in this quirky city that will make your visit a real trip.

1. Fort Point at the Golden Gate Bridge

Why go over the Golden Gate Bridge when you can go under it? One of the most interesting perspectives of the iconic bridge can be seen from the Fort Point National Historic Site that lies beneath it. The brick underground fortress was built by the US Army to secure the city against foreign attack during the Gold Rush between 1853 and 1861 and to protect it from the Confederates during the Civil War.

The forgotten fort fell into disrepair until the bridge was built in 1937 when it gained a whole new popularity. And, rightly so. There’s plenty to dig about Fort Point including a self-guided tour of the fort and tunnels.

Of course you’ll want to experience the bridge too. Most people don’t know there’s a secret access that you can walk out on for a true bird’s eye view.

2. Beach
